Tell me something about yourself
Originally born and raised in Rhinelander, Wisconsin I moved to Seattle for law school. It quickly became obvious that I had found my new home on the West Coast. After graduating from law school I was lucky to find a job in Bellingham, a dream city for an outdoor enthusiast such as myself. After living in Bellingham for four years, I cannot imagine living anywhere else.
What interested and motivated you to join the BSFC board
I immediately identified with Blue Skies' mission when I first learned of the organization three years ago. Having been raised with my two brothers by a single mother, I have firsthand experience with not having enough money to partake in activities that most people take as a given. I joined the BSFC board to help further the important work that Blue Skies does for the children and families in our community.
What goals do you have as a board member?
I hope to that my skills and networks, both professional and social, will help maintain and expand Blue Skies' existing programs. By being an active board member involved in the greater community I aim to raise community awareness and participation in Blue Skies' annual events and activities to strengthen Blue Skies' ability to carry out its mission statement.
What motivates you in life?
A desire to positively affect the daily lives of those persons surrounding me, whether friends, family, clients or strangers.
Sum up your experience and involvement in the non-profit world
As a graduating senior I received a scholarship from a local family in Rhinelander, Wisconsin which helped me pay for tuition at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. I promised myself that when I got my first job I would give back to my hometown as a show of gratitude for the support I received. After graduating from law school I established a scholarship at Rhinelander High School for children with financial need. My wife, Sarah, and I have given a scholarship to a graduating student from Rhinelander High for four years running.
The Blue Skies board position is my first experience on the board of a non-profit. For the first time in my life I have the time and ability to dedicate my time and energy to a non-profit that I strongly identify with and believe in.
Describe your professional career
I joined Chmelik Sitkin & Davis P.S. in 2006 when I moved to Bellingham. In my four-plus years of experience I've concentrated my practice primarily on real estate, land use and litigation. I thoroughly enjoy working witth smart, professional and experienced people to help resolve our clients' issues as effectively as possible.
List three adjectives that describe you.
Dedicated, compassionate and loyal.
Describe your hobbies and interests.
I am an outdoor enthusiast who is happiest when I'm enjoying nature with my wife, whether hiking, backpacking, skiing or snowshoeing. When not outdoors, I enjoy playing and watching sports almost across the board.
