Kelli Kennedy - Welfare Social Worker, CSWS

Tell me something about yourself :

I have lived here in Bellingham since February 2008. I moved here after spending the last year and a half in Santa Cruz California. During our time in Santa Cruz, my boyfriend Aaron and I lived as if it was a very long vacation, one in which we had to work. We camped on the beach, boogie boarded, played in the ocean and enjoyed all that California had to offer. It was a bit scary to move from such a magnificent place, but we have been pleasantly surprised by the beautiful and abundant Whatcom County.

What interested and motivated you to join the BSFC board?

I felt inspired when I learned what a remarkable organization BSFC is. I have always wished to assist young children in achieving goals and aspirations, and have found an outlet to do so. BSFC offers me a chance to make a difference in the lives of less privileged children right here in my own community.

What goals do you have as a board member?

I hope to assist in providing opportunities and resources to foster children and low income families in Whatcom County.  I will strive to promote Blue Skies at community events as well as through my work as a welfare social worker.

What motivates you in life?

I am motivated to give of myself and offer a voice to those who cannot speak for themselves.

Sum up your experience and involvement in the non-profit world:

My work with non-profit organizations began in Colorado. I worked for Cerebral Palsy of Colorado teaching Head Start in a preschool classroom. I was then promoted and supervised three Head Start classrooms. I attended and participated in many board meetings as the voice for the population we served as well as the voice for the teaching staff.  I then moved to California where I ran a Before and After School Program for a non-profit organization, Campus Kids Connection. I feel privileged to be a part of BSFC's dynamic board of directors.

Describe your professional career:

I spent the majority of my career in the Head Start arena. I began teaching in an inclusive classroom where I spent the first few years of my career. I was promoted and then spent the next few years supervising in a variety of settings. When I moved here to Bellingham I had the fantastic opportunity to work with Whatcom Guardian Ad Litem Services as an advocate for children. It was that opportunity that gave me the ability to join the state as a Child and Family Welfare Social Worker, where I am currently.

List three adjectives that describe you:

Compassionate, devoted and spontaneous

Describe your hobbies and interests:

I love to spend time with Aaron and my three dogs Sunny, Huedo and Cruz. We enjoy hiking, camping, swimming, cooking and spending time in our new home. I also enjoy Yoga, exercising, and making beaded jewelry.
